Our History
1911
Medine’s inception
Originally called The Medine Sugar Estates, the group operated 12,240km2 of sugar estates including Belle Vue, Medine, La Mecque, and Eaux Bonnes. Medine operated a milling factory that received sugarcanes from the area between Richelieu and Tamarin.
1969
West East Limited (WEAL)
FUEL and Medine estates merged to form West East Limited (WEAL). With the end of the Sugar Protocol in the late 1990’s, WEAL later demerged, paving the way for The Medine Sugar Estates Co Ltd – then located on John Kennedy Street in Port Louis – to diversify into businesses other than sugar.
2005
Medine Masterplan
The Medine Masterplan 2005-2025 was published, setting out the Group’s vision for the sustainable development of 3,000 hectares of land along Mauritius’ western coast. The masterplan includes residential, industrial, commercial, and leisure-related developments, and has been adapted to reflect changing needs ever since.
2009
Medine Ltd
In 2009, Medine rebranded and restructured, creating three core clusters: Property, Agriculture, and Leisure. A fourth cluster – Education – was added in 2014. Our headquarters were relocated from Port Louis to Cascavelle in 2015, ending 104 years in Mauritius’ capital.
2017
Launch of Uniciti
The launch of our 823-acre Smart City was a pivotal moment in Medine’s history. Based on a Live, Work, Enjoy and Learn concept, Uniciti was set apart by its educational offer, as well as its residential, business, and leisure developments. It was intended as an integrated, connected city.
2023
The West
In 2023, Medine initiated The West, a territorial brand that brings together western Mauritius’ stakeholders to promote the region and support its inclusive, sustainable development.
